Our story

The seed for the Community Farmland Trust was planted in 2025 during an IDEAS Lab hosted by the Public Health Association of BC.

A small group of passionate community members joined forces to explore ways to support local farmers and boost food production.

We quickly realized that protecting farmland today is the best way to ensure future generations have access to healthy food, sustainable communities and beautiful landscapes.

From those early brainstorming sessions, our Trust began to grow!

Our community promises

  • 1. We will never sell land to industry.

  • 2. We will never leave land out of production.

  • 3. We will never negatively impact the natural landscape.

Our mission & values

Our mission is simple: we want to relieve poverty, advance agricultural education and ensure long-term food security by acquiring land for community farms.

To achieve this, we are guided by six founding principles:

  • Ensuring everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food through local, democratic control.

  • Providing hands-on opportunities for people to learn vital agricultural skills.

  • Protecting our forests, streams and wetlands while actively enriching the soil.

  • Acknowledging the unceded rights of traditional Indigenous title holders.

  • Keeping land available for community organizations and local farmers in perpetuity.

  • We believe leadership should reflect the full community it serves. That means actively centring youth, Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, and minority representatives in our governance — not as an afterthought, but as a foundation.

We are focused on supporting communities throughout Northern British Columbia, specifically targeting:

  • Bulkley-Nechako Regional District

  • Fraser-Fort George Regional District

  • Peace River Regional District
